    About Murphy Consulting

    How I can help your business

    Hello I'm Jonathan Murphy and as a former BBC digital leader I offer coaching, mentoring and consultancy services for leaders and teams who want to create positive changes, whether for their businesses or for themselves.  


    At an individual level, I use active listening and questioning techniques to provide feedback and steps to realise their objectives.  At a team level I employ proven psychometric tools to provide evidence of behaviour profiles, and use these to prompt data-driven discussions on how teams can work better together.

    About Me

    I’ve had a varied career as a journalist, producer, marketeer and latterly as a digital leader at the BBC, managing teams and working with senior stakeholders. Recently I graduated with a business management degree from the University of Roehampton.  I’m a husband and father of two amazing teenage daughters and live in semi-rural Surrey.  As a manager I’ve used coaching techniques to help colleagues improve their performance and realise their potential.  

    What is Coaching?

    It’s a series of conversational sessions with an intention of bringing about improvement or change, focused on the individual in a non-judgmental space that might not be possible in a work or personal situation.  The coach will use a combination of questioning, listening, observation and feedback to create insights and development opportunities. 

    My Style

    I use a non-directive style of coaching, in which I work in collaboration with clients, listening to their challenges and working towards a desirable outcome or to achieve an objective.  It’s a partnership of equals where I do the majority of listening but we work together on seeking a resolution.   I use the GROW model of coaching which seeks out clear objectives and options to find a resolution for them.

    • We would typically meet for an introductory session to explore broad areas of focus, the number of sessions, where/how we meet (face-to-face or online), costs and timings.  We’d also agree at this stage on some broad objectives although these might change over the course of the sessions.   
    • During each session we’d assess the current situation, explore key themes and assess approaches and create a list of key thoughts, decisions or actions.  We’d also regularly assess progress and provide honest feedback to each other. 
    • All sessions are in complete confidence and I won’t share any details unless you want to involve a colleague or manager.

    • Commitment to engage fully in the sessions and to take responsibility to achieve results 
    • Honesty and Trust – the more that we can reveal the more progress we’ll make, and that all conversations are conducted in complete trust 
    • A Growth Mindset – simply put, this is an openness to change and to do that through self-learning and enquiry
